New Orleans' Times-Picayune reported last week that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded the St. Charles Parish public school system a two-year, $28,000 grant to begin fueling 108 of its diesel-powered school buses with B20, a blend of 20 percent soybean-based biodiesel and
According to the Times-Picayune, the grant will cover the incremental expenses of using the alternative fuel, which costs between seven and 10 cents more per gallon than traditional petroleum-based diesel. Additionally, the newspaper said the school system will contribute $12,000 to the effort to help prepare facilities and educate staff about biodiesel.
The Times-Picayune said Ferriday, LA-based Delta Fuels is anticipated to supply the B20, although the school system will have to first solicit bids from a number of suppliers.
