University of Virginia (UVA) student newspaper the Cavalier Daily reported earlier this week that the University Transit System (UTS) has begun fueling its transit buses with B20, a blend of 20 percent vegetable oil-based biodiesel and 80 percent conventional diesel.

According to the Daily, UTS decided to begin using the cleaner-burning fuel following the successful completion of a pilot program earlier this year.

The newspaper said UTS director of parking and transportation Rebecca White reported that the university has observed "no difference in fuel efficiency" using the B20 blend, noting that the B20-fueled buses travel approximately 3.5 miles per gallon. White also noted that UTS expects to use 125,000 gallons of the alternative fuel over the course of the next year.
