The Johannesburg Labour Court has stopped workers at South African Airways from participating in strike action staged by colleagues at Transnet, a state transport utility.

The airline stated that the court ruling meant that any involvement by South African Airways employees in the Transnet strike would constitute unprotected action.

In addition the court also ordered that SATAWU, the trade union, should not promote the action or instigate its members to take part, Reuters reported.

The first strike, in what is to be a series of actions, was staged in January by Transnet workers in protest against the company's restructuring plans which unions fear will lead to job cuts.

A one-day nationwide stoppage is currently planned by members of SATAWU on 6 March if no progress is made in talks.
