Interim report on near miss incident in Japanese skies released.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

A government panel investigating a near miss between two Japanese passenger aircraft on 31 January this year has released its interim report.

The report shows that the air traffic controllers - a trainee and

supervisor at the Tokyo Air Traffic Control Centre in Tokorozawa near Tokyo - were unaware of the potential disaster until radar alert signals showed that a collision was imminent.

The pilots of both aircraft - one carrying 427 people and the other carrying 250 - have said that their collision warning devices went off, forcing them to take emergency measures to avoid potentially crashing into each other.

A final report will be compiled after a hearing on 17 January 2002, reported The Associated Press.
