AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
The Kazakhstan government is planning to launch a new state carrier called Kazakhstan Airlines.
The plans were revealed on 6 November by the Kazakh Transport and Communications Minister Karim Masinov, who also
Kazakhstan Airlines will be based in Astana and will compete with Air Kazakhstan, the Minister was reported as saying; however its main task will be to develop Astana as a transit centre.
In related news, the government recently gave a stake of 50% plus one share in Air Kazakhstan to Kazkommertz, a private bank, in lieu of unpaid debts, and the bank has also won the right to manage the remaining shares.
Further, the government will apparently hand control of regional airports and airlines to private companies in a restructure of the aviation industry, with the airport and airline in Atyrau, for instance, to be managed by KazTransOil's subsidiary Evro-Asia Air. Meanwhile navigation systems have apparently been removed from the control of the Air Kazakhstan Group.
