AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
Air France has indicated its desire to engage in the consolidation of the European airline industry through mergers or acquisition partners.
The announcement was made by the carrier's CEO Jean-Cyril Spinetta
Spinetta told CNN 'I'm convinced that consolidation of the transport industry in Europe is not only inevitable but necessary and Air France intends to join this process.'
The European airline industry remains fragmented with a ration of nearly one airline per country according to Reuters, which is in line with international aviation rules that stipulate that each country have its own airline.
However, consolidation in Europe is not seen as an easy task, with many regulatory hurdles, alliance relationships and related factors making only friendly takeovers possible.
