EU expected to include aviation industry in emissions trading system.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The European Commission is expected to agree to a proposal to include aircraft in the European Union's emissions trading system.

The Commission is reportedly expected to approve the proposal tomorrow (27 September).

It has examined three ways of including the aviation industry in efforts being made to cut the emission of greenhouse gases. The options were through taxes, ticket charges or including the industry in the emissions trading system. The inclusion of the aviation industry into the system has been supported by European airports and some of the major airlines such as British Airways.

The emissions trading system was launched in January this year, Reuters reported. It sets a limit to the amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted by energy-intensive installations - for example power plants - and it also allows these installations to buy or sell allowances that give the right to emit the gas.
