GE Aircraft Engines cuts up to 800 jobs.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2003 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

GE Aircraft Engines, the aircraft engine business of General Electric Co, has revealed plans to eliminate up to 800 salaried jobs by the end of June.

The cuts amount to about 3% of the unit's workforce and will affect

employees around the world. The action has been blamed on the downturn in the airline industry.

According to a company spokesman, GE Aircraft Engines is offering early retirement and voluntary severance packages in an effort to reduce the number of lost jobs.
