AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Northwest Airlines Corp plans to dismiss 600 mechanics in Minnesota.

According to the airline, laying off 600 mechanics is part of the previously announced plans to lay off as many as 930 mechanics in 2005. The notices, which have been sent off this week, would reportedly be effective in July. The mechanics can choose to transfer to other jobs with the airline or accept being laid off.

According to Northwest spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch, the airline will also shut down two heavy maintenance lines that are operated by contractors, The Associated Press reported.

Northwest has previously said that the decision on the lay-offs was a result of parking about 30 DC-9 aircraft and closing a heavy maintenance line servicing those aircraft.
