WestJet Airlines sees possibilities to become low-fare, short-haul carrier.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

After reviewing the Transport Canada-Competition Bureau announcement approving the takeover of Canadian Airlines by Air Canada, WestJet Airlines, has indicated that it sees new opportunities

opening up for establishing itself as a low-fare, domestic, short-haul carrier.

The carrier also indicated that it would be asking `the government for clarification on the timeline for the embargo against an Air Canada-run low fare carrier as it relates to WestJet.` But WestJet Airlines` management is otherwise pleased with the majority of the government conditions for the merger.
