Swedish hijack suspect charged over illegal weapons possession.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

A Swedish man who was suspected of planning to hijack a Ryanair flight has been charged with the lesser offence of illegal possession of a weapon.

Kerim Chatty, a Swedish national of Tunisian origin, was arrested in

Sweden on 29 August as he was preparing to board a flight to the UK, after security officials found a gun in his carry-on luggage.

The earlier hijacking charges were dropped after prosecutors could find no evidence to disprove Chatty's claim that he had forgotten the gun was in his bag. If convicted of the weapons charge, Chatty could face up to four years in prison.
