AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Iraq's national carrier Iraqi Airways began flying direct routes to Saudi Arabia on Monday (3 January) for the Hajj pilgrimage, for the first time since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

The carrier will have two or

three daily flights from Baghdad, Irbil in the north and Basra in the south for 12 days. More than 17,000 Muslim pilgrims are expected to take the roundtrip flight, which costs USD500, the transportation ministry said.

This year the Hajj is expected to begin on 22 January.
