State-controlled airlines Indian Airlines and Air India are to finalise plans to acquire new aircraft, according to the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.
The minister has told the country's parliament that
Indian Airlines is expected to place an order by March 2005 - the domestic airline has previously said that it planned to acquire 43 new passenger aircraft from Airbus, The Associated Press reported. That order has been valued at EUR1.5bn.
There have however been recent reports that the choice of supplier for the airlines may not be decided by the government.
Air India has said that it wants to buy 50 aircraft to replace older ones and expand services on some routes. The minister did not give a schedule for the airline's order.
