Singapore Airlines pilots continue dispute over rest areas.

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Singapore Airlines and its pilots union are scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow (21 August) on a dispute over in-flight rest areas.

From 1 August 2002, the carrier began earmarking all of its new bed-like first-class

seats aboard its jumbo jet aircraft for paying passengers, thus forcing pilots to take their breaks in less expensive economy-class seats.

The airline's pilots - who passed three resolutions on 16 August to reject the airline's offer of compensation for forcing pilots to take rest breaks in economy class seats - claim that the move violates their 1998 contract.

If the two parties and the Ministry of Manpower officials fail to resolve the dispute, any of the three parties involved can initiate the arbitration process, reported Dow Jones.
