A civil libertarian has filed a lawsuit against the US government and two major airlines, after they allegedly violated several amendments to the US Constitution.

The lawsuit, filed by John Gilmore - co-founder

of the Electronic Frontier Foundation - claims that requiring ID from travellers who are not suspected of being a threat to airport security restricts freedom of travel, permits intrusive searches without good cause and violates the Freedom of Information Act.

Gilmore was reportedly prevented from flying by both United Airlines and Southwest Airlines on 4 July, when he refused to produce ID or undergo extensive security screening.

Photograph ID is required in order to travel, according to information on the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration's web sites, reported Reuters.
