Passengers travelling to Zia International Airport, Bangladesh were stranded for several hours on Thursday morning (23 May), due to the arrival of the Leader of the Opposition and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. Incoming passengers were forced to wait inside the airport for a number of hours, until police removed a barricade set up around the airport to prevent vehicles from entering the area.
US Airways pilots have stated that the airline's request to cut annual costs by USD595m is too high, however labour unions are prepared to negotiate with the management. The airline reportedly needs to cut costs so it can apply for federal aid and avoid bankruptcy.
Frontier Airlines has reportedly accepted delivery of its seventh Airbus A319 aircraft. The airline - which purchased the aircraft with financing from Hamburgische Landesbank in Hamburg, Germany - is expected to take delivery of a further nine Airbus A319 aircraft during its fiscal year ending 31 March 2003.
A 35-year-old woman give birth at John F. Kennedy International Airport on 23 May, shortly after she had disembarked from a Virgin Atlantic Airways flight from London. The woman - who was travelling with her 15-month-old daughter - was assisted by five police officers, who helped deliver her second child in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. The woman reportedly gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
American Trans Air has launched a Memorial Weekend sale, which features fares to Grand Cayman from USD79 for children and from USD99 for seniors. The special fares are available for purchase until midnight CST on 17 June 2002, for travel through to 31 August 2002. The special senior fares are for passengers aged 62 and older, and the children's fares are for passengers aged 2-12.
