Two governors are reportedly calling for even tougher security measures at major airports around New York City.

New York Gov. George Pataki, support by New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey, has proposed a USD100m

plan which exceeds federal rules established after the 11 September terrorist attacks. The proposed plan calls for better cameras, motion detectors and other security devices around the three major airports - John F Kennedy International, LaGuardia and New Jersey's Newark International - as well as obtaining criminal background checks of shop workers and fingerprint scans for all airport employees.

In November 2001, Congress passed a law that required background checks for security guards and people working on aircraft or handling baggage, however the proposed plan calls for these checks to be extended to other airport employees, reported The Associated Press.
