The Swedish accident investigation commission has commended Britannia Airways pilots and stewardesses for their action when the electrical system in a galley exploded on 2 February last year.
The Boeing 757 aircraft, which was carrying 232 passengers and eight crew members, was reportedly on its way from Stockholm, Sweden to Malaga, Spain when the explosion occurred. One of the stewardesses had respiratory problems after the incident while the remaining crew and all passengers were unharmed.
The explosion also made the aircraft wobble as it affected the power to the autopilot. One of the stewardesses managed to extinguish the subsequent fire. The aircraft requested and received permission to land at the Landvetter airport, Sweden as soon as possible.
The investigation has shown that the power supply to the ovens in the galley was not extensive enough and caused overheating and short-circuiting, reported Dagens Nyheter, a Swedish newspaper.
