BPCA holds 'green' seminar. (Transcripts).

Acting president of the New York State Research and Development Authority Peter Smith and other energy experts discussed ways to lessen dependence on imported energy and reduce energy costs through the benefits of green building technology, at a recent Battery Park City. Authority green building

seminar.

"While the attacks of Sept. 11 were not specifically about energy, they served as a painful reminder to us that we are overly dependent on imported energy." Smith said.

New York State is the national leader in implementing green building technology to design environmentally responsible buildings. The technology employs computer modeling to maximize energy efficiency of buildings and materials analysis to ensure a healthy environment for people who live and work in the buildings. Battery Park City's Solaire building, the world's first 'green' residential high-rise, was highlighted in the building management seminar as a 'model of green design. "In the area of environmental sustainability the governor's leadership and vision has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council who awarded him its leadership award and the Alliance to Save Energy who gave him the Charles H. Percy Award, the highest honor given to a public official," said Timothy Carey, president & CEO, Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority.

The focus of the building management seminar was to provide building owners and managers the opportunity to become more familiar with the programs, services and financial assistance offered to help assist in making their buildings more environmentally friendly. Through these programs they can achieve energy savings, a healthier environment and an improved tenant safety and comfort.

The conference also featured remarks from several distinguished speakers including: Peter Blom, program manager, ConED Solutions; Robert Tscherne, senior vice president, New York Power Authority; Dennis Falvey, senior engineering manager, PB Power, Inc.; and Wayne Tusa, president, Environmental Risk & Loss Control.

Among the vendors and organizations offering exhibits were the Philips Lighting Company, Energy Star/U.S. Environmental Agency, the Solaire-Albanese Development Corporation, Tri-Star Solar and Lutrono Electronics.
