If you fly often, you may have noticed that airlines are adding winglets, or those vertical lips on the ends of wings, to more and more of their planes. By significantly decreasing the natural aerodynamic drag of planes and their wings, winglets can lower an aircraft’s fuel consumption by between 3 and 4 percent, and up to 5 percent on certain planes. This fuel decrease not only means good things for the environment, it means more long haul flights, including international flights, for you, the traveler.
So why aren’t all airplanes equipped with winglets?
Well, that seems to be the momentum. Southwest has already implemented them on most of their 737s, and Delta has been following suite. My opinion? If it saves energy, winglets away!
