Sustainability and Profits

Thursday, August 2 2007

A great example of a very successful multi-national company that has turned from being heavy on the environment to lighter is floor-covering company Interface. In the early 1990’s  it produced over two million pounds (one million kilograms) of synthetic floor coverings. That’s a lot of polluting and waste material of non-renewable materials.

Then in the mid 1990’s company president Ray Anderson chose to make some radical changes. He eliminated toxic waste from the production process, used renewable forms of energy for power and created a culture within and around Interface that is aware of the importance of natural systems.

Anderson is still continuing the company’s journey to 100 percent sustainability and - here is the best news of all for business owners - the company continues to be very profitable while still reducing waste and emissions.
