TIPS TO TRAVEL GREEN

Wednesday, October 4 2006

When you fly, say, from New York to Los Angeles you leave a trail of around 1600 pounds of carbon dioxide. As in each individual. So multiply that by however many people are on one plane and however many planes are in the sky right now and that´s a lot of carbon creating greenhouse problems for our planet and us.

Companies are starting to look at the environmental cost. Such as Hewlett-Packard who has estimated its business travel generated 279,000 tons of carbon emissions last year. They decided to buy Ford Escape hybrids for their fleet of corporate vehicles in an effort to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions

CURRENT ACTIONS BY COMPANIES INCLUDE:

- choosing hotels who re-use and recycle as well as change sheets and wash towels only when requested
- joining a carbon offset program
- investing in renewable energy (just look at Richard Branson)
- buying hybrid cars
- cutting back on business travel
- organising travel logistics so several people travel in a car together

Rental car companies are starting to offer hybrid cars and companies can begin a policy to only hire such vehicles. Chauffeured car services in Los Angeles (Eco Limo, http://www.eco-limo.com ), San Francisco (Green Car Limo, http://www.greencarlimo.com ), New York (Ozocar, http://www.ozocar.com ) and Boston (PlanetTran, http://www.planettran.com ) are shunning the ubiquitous black Lincoln Town Car in favor of hybrids.
