Gum Is Not Part of the Workplace

Snap, crackle, pop! Is that a cereal commercial? Nope. It's the sound of the receptionist's gum chewing that resonated across the office (and on the phone) as I sat waiting for an appointment. I could not believe it.

Seriously folks. This is not a joke. Gum and food have no place next to your telephone. Have you ever called someone and shortly after getting into your discussions you detected some mouth noises? I sure have. And it prompts me to ask whether another time would work better for our discussion. Or maybe never...

Chewing gum or eating while on the phone shows poor judgement and lack of respect. I know you're busy and have way too much work for too few hours, but just don't do it. It can ruin your reputation.

What do you think? Am I too "old school" on this issue? Leave me a comment.
