Andy G. Cartales, age 65, of Gaston, died Jan. 11, 2005.

Born Jan. 5, 1940, in Portland, Cartales was the founder of Delta Fire Inc., a fire-protection contracting service in Portland. He formed the company in 1987 after leaving his position as manager of the fire-protection contractor M.B. Hinds. Before founding Delta Fire, Cartales worked in the fire protection and sprinkler business for 26 years. He started in 1961 as a field apprentice, became a field foreman five years later, moved into an engineering position in 1974 and then to sales in 1976. He became manager of M.B. Hinds in 1977.

An Oregonian all of his life, Cartales was a Harley-Davidson enthusiast, an outdoorsman and a sports fanatic.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Delores (Heine) Cartales; his children Steven, Karen, Mary Beth and Andrew Cartales; two brothers, John Cartales and Harry Cartales; a sister, Marie Anderson; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Jan. 16 at Countryside Community Church in Sherwood.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.
