NCMA is also showing "Chuck Close: From the Collection of Sherry Mallin" in its second floor and contemporary galleries. Close, a modern artist, works in a variety of styles, but he is most known for photorealism, a process whereby he transfers photos onto paper or canvas. That show also runs until to Feb. 4 as well.
Help wanted
Child Abuse Prevention Services, which works to prevent child abuse and neglect, said it needs volunteers for its programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
According to Alane Fagin, the organization's executive director, CAPS expects to receive close to 1,500 applications for its anti- violence programs. But with its current staff, she said, the organization will only be able to handle 1,100 of those requests.
Volunteers will be trained to be able to present workshops on bullying prevention, child abuse and neglect, Internet safety, sexual harassment awareness and prevention and date rape awareness and prevention.
History lives
The Ward Melville Heritage Organization announced the presentation of "The History of Stony Brook Village Center and The Emmets of Stony Brook," an exhibit of artifacts from the Suffolk County town.
The history exhibit will feature memorabilia and architectural models of the Stony Brook Village center, which was built in 1941 by Ward Melville.
The Emmets exhibit features photographs, sterling silver serving pieces, books and other artifacts from the Emmet family. The Emmets bought 165 acres of land in Stony Brook in 1905.
The exhibit is on display at WMHO's Educational and Cultural Center.
A good room at the Holiday Inn
Stony Brook's Holiday Inn Express is extending help this holiday season to families in need of lodging.
The hotel is distributing certificates for free lodging at the Stony Brook University Medical Center, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, the Long Island State Veterans Home, Hope House and various churches and synagogues. Those institutions will distribute the certificates to families who need help with shelter.
"While this is the happiest time of the year, for most of us, I can't think of anything more depressing than being the parents of a sick, hospitalized child with no way of being able to share the holidays with them, or being a down-on-your luck family without adequate shelter or a suitable place to spend the holidays," said John Tsunis, owner of the hotel.
