NEWARK In hopes of getting construction started on the New Jersey Devils' Newark arena, the city and team have agreed to several compromises. Most notably, the Devils are no longer required to oversee the building of a 300-room hotel on the site.

The sides also agreed to move forward despite disputes about how promised tax abatements will be handled and legal challenges to the funding of the entire project.
The arena project, part of a larger downtown redevelopment plan, could create more than 13,000 jobs and $15 million in annual payroll tax, according to Newark officials.
