Jose Mejia last week surprised the telecommunications-equipment industry by quitting as president of the supply chain networks group at Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill. Mejia, who joined Lucent several years ago from rival Nortel, gained visibility as he integrated the performance-challenged company's

supply chain and manufacturing operations over the past five years.

Mejia hasn't announced his next move and wasn't available for comment. His duties will be assumed by Mike Jones, Lucent's vice president of systems and integration centers.

Lucent spokeswoman Mary Ward denied market speculation that Mejia's resignation was triggered by the company's planned merger with Alcatel of France that would lead to a loss of 8,000 jobs across both companies. While Lucent COO Frank D'Amelia reportedly credited Mejia with saving the company "billions of dollars in fixed manufacturing and material costs," Ward says Mejia has for some time "wanted to consider other options."
