Delgado Community College Charity School of Nursing uses human patient simulator

Delgado Community College Charity School of Nursing started using a new teaching tool in its training center this fall. Nursing students now use a human patient simulator for hands-on lessons.

The computerized dummy simulates symptoms such as unusual heart and lung sounds, dilated pupils,

dizziness and pain. Using a wireless microphone, the dummies even respond to questions.

The simulator lab costs about $155,000 and includes an adult dummy, a patient room, a nursing station, patient records, medical supplies and equipment.

Deb Kohler, Delgado spokeswoman, said the school might add another adult patient or infant simulator to the lab in the future.
