Southeastern Louisiana University spends $1.2M on Project Teach

North Shore schools want more teachers to start speaking students' language.

Tangipahoa, Livingston, East Baton Rouge and Lafayette parish school districts have agreed to participate in a second year of Southeastern Louisiana University's Project Teach. The project is a five-year program

meant to improve and increase the number of teachers qualified to work with students who speak limited English. The program is funded through a $1.2 million Title III professional development grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of English Language Acquisition.

Project Teach, said director Rossana Boyd, provides tuition, materials and technology stipends for up to 33 in-service teachers to take four online courses through Southeastern. Those who complete the program are certified to teach English as a Second Language. Southeastern is the only Louisiana university, and one of only a handful nationwide, to offer add-on ESL certification entirely through the Internet.
