New Orleans Nonprofit Briefs May 5, 2003

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program of New Orleans is using a $297,000 grant from the Louisiana Supreme Court to train volunteer advocates for abused children being tried in the state's juvenile court system.

The volunteers will be appointed by judges to research the specifics

of each child's case and speak in court for the child's best interest. The next training session begins Monday, June 2. Call Maureen Goodly at 522-1962.

The Arts Council of New Orleans announced the winners of its Mayor's Arts Awards, which are given to artists, arts organizations, corporations and arts patrons making exceptional contributions. This year's winners include musician Kermit Ruffins, artist Lee Tucker, French Quarter Festivals Inc., Zeitgeist Multidisciplinary Arts Center, singer Rev. Lois Dejean and Hibernia National Bank.

The Louisiana Public Facilities Authority has joined a statewide coalition of nonprofit organizations, U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, state Treasurer John Kennedy and Freddie Mac to launch a $50 million statewide homeownership effort. Under the LouLease initiative, the LPFA will purchase houses and lease them to Louisiana families. If the family makes timely lease payments for 39 months, it can assume ownership from the LPFA.
