Energy production in Gulf makes slow progress

Oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, almost entirely shut

down because of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, continues to recover after nearly two weeks of slow progress.

According to the Minerals Management Service, 29 percent of daily oil production in the Gulf of Mexico is back online, up from 22.5 percent Friday. Shut-in production stands at 1.1 million barrels of oil per day, or about 71 percent of the Gulf's 1.5 million barrels per day of daily production.

About 40 percent of natural gas production is back online, up from 36 percent Friday. Shut-in natural gas production is 6 billion cubic feet per day, about 60 percent of the 10 billion cubic feet per day of normal daily Gulf gas production.

According to the MMS, 266 of the 819 manned platforms and 12 of the 134 manned drilling rigs operating in the Gulf remain evacuated.
