"Chang Nominated for Heisman Trophy." "Kahumoku

national title."
Those are the University of Hawai'i student-athletes make for
their accomplishments on the field. But the topic less publicized is
academics, an area in which
UH student-athletes have made enormous
progress over the years. Balancing both academics and athletics is a
demanding responsibility for the nearly 450 University of Hawai'i
student-athletes. However, according to the latest NCAA graduation
statistics, UH student-athletes graduate more frequently than the
general student population (57% to 52%). In addition, 72 percent of
student-athletes who completed their eligibility graduated, a figure
which ranks UH in the Top 20 among all Division I public universities.
This past year, a total of 154 student-athletes earned UH
Scholar-Athlete status. More than half of the student-athletes (234)
earned a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and 45
percent (205) of the student-athletes had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or
higher. In addition 24 student-athletes received a semester 4.0 GPA. The
mean GPA of all student-athletes was 2.91. UH maintains a tremendous
academic support system for its student-athletes. The newly built
Nagatani Academic Center is the hub of academic activity for
student-athletes and serves as a unique environment for advising and
study groups. It is here where young minds become the leaders of
tomorrow.
