SMALL BUSINESS: Hatter shows Hollywood touch, Greeley Hat works fits hats for all; sells nationwide
Friday, August 23 2002
GREELEY-Movie history resides in Greeley along with a piece of presidential memorabilia.
Trent Johnson is the owner of Greeley Hat Works and his creations can be found in the movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and on President George W. Bush's head. Johnson will spend hours shaping and making sure the fit is just right with one of his creations.
"I honestly love what I do," Johnson said. "But making the hat is only half of the process; working with the clientele and making sure they are happy is the most enjoyable part of my job."
Greeley Hat Works has been in operation since 1909. It originally operated as the Greeley Shining Parlor, specializing in shoe shining.
In 1926, the owner of the Shining Parlor joined forces with four Kersey boys to expand the shop to a hat shop. The new name of the operation was the Greeley Hat Shop and Shining Parlor.
Since then, the hat shop has gone through many changes in ownership and location.
One of the most recent changes happened in 1985 when Susie Orr purchased the Greeley Hat Shop. She moved the shop to her ranch northwest of Greeley.
