EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
CAL State Northridge's top ranking on the Business Journal s 2004 list of the colleges and universities in the Greater San Fernando Valley area validates it's credo, posted at its official Web site: "The university serves as the intellectual, economic and cultural
The Business Journal ranks educational institutions by full-time equivalent students, meaning taking in account students who attend school full-time and taking in haft of those who attend part time.
While CSUN is a four-year university, the second place on the list belongs to the Glendale Community College, which is followed by Los Angeles Valley College and Pierce College as 3 and 4, respectively.
Pierce ranked second in last year's list with a reported enrollment of 19,822 fulltime equivalents. But, the college's enrollment dropped to 12,092, which was still enough to secure fourth place.
Meanwhile, College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley College swapped places, with COC ranking sixth and AVC ranking seventh.
THE PACESETTER
DESPITE setbacks--primarily the state budget cuts that afflicted its 22 sister campuses from Sonoma to San Diego--Cal State Northridge has managed to accommodate more students and continue to serve the people of the San Fernando Valley.
The institution, known as Valley State College before 1957, is the only four-year public university in the region. Therefore, its role to the Valley has been indispensable.
From offerings of a variety of academic disciplines to world-class track and field athletes, CSUN has all the marks of a major university, although for years it has been stigmatized as a 'commuter school.' Nevertheless, it has attracted top talent among faculty, students, artists and athletes, competing with the prestige of UCLA and USC.
CSUN was literally decimated 10 years ago during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. But, utilizing more than $400 million in federal and state funds has enabled the school to spruce itself up, as new buildings have replaced the old and major landscaping now gives the campus a bright and airy feel. The school was by all means reborn.
