The nearly century-old Armenian genocide is at the heart of a controversy that is dividing the city of Glendale.

Earlier this year, Mayor Gus Gomez ordered the American flag to be lowered in observance of the Armenian Day of Remembrance, angering a group of residents who contend it

sets an inappropriate precedent for commemorating any number of worldwide injustices.

Now, the group, lead by real estate agent Joe Mandoky, has decided to proceed with a recall campaign against Gomez.

"We want to work very much to have the Armenian genocide observed, but not by lowering the American flag," said Mandoky. "It's supposed to fly high."

The recall effort could be tough. The group needs over 13,000 valid signatures in a city with the world's greatest concentration of Armenians outside that nation's capital.
