EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

GENSLER moved within $3 million of longstanding No. 1 DMJM Design, increasing its 2003 L.A. County billings to $35.6 million, a 16.7 percent gain over the year earlier.

Gensler Managing Principal Andrew Cohen credited the firm's diversification as key to the growth, having moved into new areas like mixed-use and school projects during a commercial development slowdown.

Seven other firms posted double-digit gains in 2003 billings, including Fields Devereaux Architects & Engineers, which moved into the Top 10 after increasing billings by more than a third. Jerde Partnership and Anshen+Allen Los Angeles also gained ground, upping billings by 19 percent and 17.6 percent, respectively.

Overall, nearly two-thirds of the Top 25 reported higher or steady billings compared with the previous year. As a group, they registered a 5.8 percent increase in billings, to $500.2 million in 2003.

HOK experienced the largest decline, reporting billings close to a third lower in 2003 than the year earlier. The firm dropped 10 places to No. 23. The St. Louis-based firm cited a completion of several major projects in 2002 and a delay in a number of projects in 2003 for its drop in L.A. County billings.

DMJM DESIGN

DMJM managed to hold on as the largest architecture firm in Los Angeles County for the 14th year in a row, but its competitors are getting closer. DMJM posted a 2 percent increase in billings, to $38.2 million last year.

After a 2002 reorganization that saw its engineering department move to Orange County and the shift of several projects to parent company AECOM Technology Corp., the firm's billings lead over its competitors has narrowed.

In the midst of a weak corporate market, DMJM has concentrated on the public sector, according to its president, Ray Landy. The Los Angeles-based firm is working on projects ranging from package screening systems at Los Angeles International Airport to the NASA Ames Research Center in Northern California.

DMJM has also landed a contract for the design of the new headquarters for the L.A. Police Department, a project valued at between $150 million and $200 million and now in the planning and programming phase.

It has been one of the firms working with the L.A. Community College District on the master plan for its nine colleges. The massive, ongoing project focuses on sustainability, using green design, efficient power sources and non-toxic materials for construction.

Landy said the project could last another five to 10 years and involve between 50 and 100 architects and engineers.

For the coming year, he has seen things pick up in the office sector, but doesn't expect a large increase. "There is a huge pent up demand in interiors and building renovation, but not a lot of demand in new building construction," he said. "(There is) improvement in the marketplace. It's going to be a while but it's getting better not worse."
