EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
THE 25 largest colleges and universities enrolled 527,468 students in fail 2004, with just over half of those attending part-time. The total number of students fell by 3.8 percent from a year earlier because budget constraints led Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to restrict
Budget cuts have had wide impact in Los Angeles County, where 22 of the 25 largest colleges and universities are run by the state.
At community colleges, fees jumped $8 per unit to $26 per unit for 2004-2005. At UCLA, the county's largest university, undergraduate fees for students who are state residents rose by $1,708 to $6,586 per year. Fees to attend school in the California State University system increased by 14 percent.
USC, the region's second-largest school, remained the most expensive university to attend. Tuition costs rose by $1,296, or 4.5 percent.
Overall, the 25 largest colleges and universities in Los Angeles County awarded 70,763 degrees and certificates in 2003-2004. They employ 11,790 full-time faculty and more than 55,000 employees in total.--David Nusbaum
THE PACESETTER
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES
WITH 35,070 fulltime equivalent students enrolled last fall, UCLA remained the largest university in Los Angeles County--and the largest in the UC system.
Enrollment declined by 2,779 students from the prior school year as a result of state budget reductions that affected all UC campuses. UCLA enrolled 3,723 freshman in fall 2004 and plans to increase freshman enrollment to 4,300, now that the enrollment restraint has been removed. The university, founded in 1919, received more than 42,000 applications in 2005 and admitted 11,338 students (not all of those admitted enroll).
In March, the university launched a $20 million Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine that will focus on HIV, cancer and neurological disorders. The five-year initiative will allow teams of researchers to compete for state grants created by the passage of Proposition 71.
UCLA's budget exceeded $3.2 billion in 2004-2005. Its 174 buildings on 419 acres in Westwood house undergraduate facilities, medical buildings and 11 professional schools. The university offers 118 undergraduate degree programs and 200 graduate degree programs.
