Daily News, union fail to reach settlement
Management at the Daily News and representatives of the Los Angeles Newspaper Guild concluded their 28th bargaining session without settling the editorial staff's first contract since employees voted to bring in the union a year ago.
The Daily News has offered a $650-per-week salary for reporters who have worked at the paper six years, far short of the union's $800-per-week request.
The $650 minimum offer is less than the minimum scale for experienced reporters at Los Angeles papers with smaller circulations. For example, reporters earn $756 at the Long Beach Press-Telegram with a 136,000 circulation, $710 at The Daily Breeze with 97,921 and $754 at the Daily Racing Form.
The difference between the two sides, said attorney Thomas Burke who represents management, is that the union wants "high minimum wage irrespective of performance," while management wants a lower minimum, but will bring up the pay with performance.
Both sides said there is no target date for concluding the negotiations. Burke emphasized that great progress has been made on many issues and he does not believe that "there is anything to be gained by setting a deadline for the first contract."
