Alaska is home to record-breaking low temperatures and the most ice cream consumption per capita in the United States.

Alaska Supreme Ice Cream Inc. has been selling ice cream to Alaskans since 1985 and has done well, according to owners David Smith and Don Dye.

Smith said 20 years ago

he calculated that each week three quarts of ice cream per person is consumed in Alaska. And he believes that number has increased each year since.

Ironically, he believes ice cream sells well in the state because of its frigid environment.

"In the past, the Eskimos used fatty products like walruses, whales and seals to preserve fat on their bodies," Smith said. "Today, we just substitute those products with ice cream."

Some 20 years ago, Dye and Smith were working at a local dairy and found themselves yearning to do something more with their lives.

Knowing the dairy industry, and the fact Alaskans love ice cream, they decided to make a product that was unlike any other.
