Sustainability. The term is used widely today in many fields of endeavour. While its definition, its usage and the interpretation may vary, there are certainly common themes that emerge when one considers the applied usage.

While the term has made its way into general parlance and profession-based

jargon, Oxford Dictionary in 1991 did not list "sustainability." Its closest definition was for the word 'sustain' - v. 1. to support. 2. to keep alive. 3. to keep going continuously.1

Other applications of the term have come from a variety of sources. These include:

* in First Nations' traditions, where consideration (of the consequences of peoples' actions) is given to how such actions will impact seven generations out;

* in international venues like the Earth Summit (examples include Rio and Johannesburg), where the context is the entire planet; and

* in more focused ways, such as in the discussion of sustainable savings, sustainable labour supply and sustainable energy.
