Atmos warns of higher winter gas bills.

Atmos Energy Corp. reported that natural gas utility bills for an average north central Texas residential customer could be approximately 60-90% higher than bills last winter because of the effects of two hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, the already high demand for natural gas, and tight supplies

of domestic natural gas production.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita disrupted about 15% of the nation's natural gas production, which was already tight because of growing demands from power plants and other users. Cooler weather also could boost the bills customers will pay to heat their homes because the past two winters have been warmer than normal.
