YZ, A History of Service...
Like people, company attitudes are formed in their early years...
Growing out of the roots of service, from an oil-field engine service company located in the heart of the Permian Basin, grew a company that still focuses on customer service. YZ Industries.
It
Today, sales are global, and service to the customer is still the first priority in the thoughts of our YZ team. It is so important, we have technical telephone support personnel available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. And if that doesn't solve the problem, our technical field-sales personnel, from our in-house people to our manufacturers representatives, will travel to meet with you on location. No excuses, just plain ol'e west Texas congeniality and help.
Today, YZ's product line spans from electronically controlled crude oil and light liquid samplers to include: the DynaPak electronically controlled natural gas samplers; the industry leading odorant injection system, NJEX; and the revolutionary new odorant detection system, DTEX.
DynaPak Natural Gas Sampling Systems
Sampling systems have been a part of the YZ product portfolio for a long time. Starting with the crude oil sampling system, YZ gained experience in manufacturing durable, small metering pumps which could resist the corrosive elements contained in crude oil. Building on that experience, in October of 1992, the US Patent office awarded Ted Zeck, son of I. V. Zeck, a patent for a fluid sampling pump which was revolutionary in design. The pump, now the literal heart of the DynaPak Sampling System, contains fewer parts than any other pump, thus resulting in longer life.
The sample pump is only one component of the DynaPak Sampling System. Teamed with an electronic controller to perform solenoid operations and flow calculations, the DynaPak is equipped to perform proportional-to-flow, or time-based sampling, and can accept analog or pulse signal inputs. The complete electronic package retains FM approval, and certifications from CSA and CENELEC, for use in Class I, Div. 1, Group C, D, Hazardous Locations. These approvals, combined with the rugged engineering of the DynaPak, make it suitable for use on inland and offshore measurement stations.
As a result, the simplicity of how the DynaPak operates make the system a reliable component of your natural gas or light liquid measurement program.
NJEX Odorization Systems
With 40 years of experience in designing and manufacturing rugged oil & gas sampling systems, YZ answered the industry's call in 1989 to design and manufacture the industry's first integrated odorization system.
Building upon the strengths and experience learned from manufacturing sampling pumps, YZ introduced the NJEX Odorization System. This NJEX System quickly became the industry standard due to the "Total System" approach applied by YZ.
The NJEX System Integrates an injection pump, specifically designed for odorant use, with a proprietary measurement device, linked by an electronic controller to constantly monitor, and if necessary adjust injection rates to ensure that the desire amount of odorant is injected into the flow stream.
Each NJEX System electronic package retains FM approval, and certifications from CSA and CENELEC, for use in Class I, Div. 1, Group C, D, Hazardous Locations.
The New DTEX Odorant Detection System
Building upon the expertise developed in engineering and manufacturing World Class odorization systems, YZ introduced a revolutionary new product at the July '98 IGT Odorization Conference.
This product, called the DTEX Odor Detection System, incorporates state-of-the-art microprocessor technology, to ensure the safe use of natural gas. Beginning with the only acceptable means of detecting the odorant level in natural gas, the human nose, DTEX integrates the most advanced electronics available to create and implement a complete odorant level-testing program.
DTEX is a small, hand held instrument, which assists the user in accurately quantifying odorant level in natural gas with menu-driven, step-by-step instructions.
Simply press the power key to turn DTEX on, verify the self-diagnostics, and follow the user-prompts. After connecting to the sample point, sniff test completion times typically run 2 to 3 minutes. The DTEX system displays the actual air/gas percentage, eliminating the need for flow tubes and cross-reference charts. With an on-board database of 50 test locations, the DTEX can record multiple tests for each test location, including threshold & distinct readings and test comments, such as weather conditions, etc. Then DTEX goes one-step further by storing up to 100 complete test results electronically. Back at the office the test results can be individually reviewed or downloaded into a PC. It's that simple.

Rugged
The Btu Transmitter is designed to provide continuous service in remote, often unfriendly installations. The controlling electronics and the chromatography are enclosed in an explosion-proof housing. No special tools or knowledge required.
When power is at a premium, the Btu Transmitter is in its element. With only a six watt (nominal) power requirement, solar applications are easily configured. The 12 Vdc voltage requirement means that the Transmitter will go just about anywhere it is needed.
Reliable
The Model 8000 utilizes time proven analysis techniques. However, the Transmitter uses state-of-the-art technology to accomplish tasks associated with the analysis. Nothing magical, just good engineering and software that can only come from a process analysis background.
A modular approach to the construction of this product has resulted in a very efficient solution to remedial maintenance. Should service be required, the Btu Transmitter can be shut down and put back in service in less than one hour
Designed for installation in a wide range of applications, Total flow engineers have pre-configured sample conditioners. From clean flowing gas delivered by a local distribution company (LDC) to dirtier production applications, a conditioner is available to meet the need. Totalflow has eliminated the 'custom' part of sample conditioning.
Repeatable
With a focus on proven analysis techniques and construction processes that build in repeatability, the Btu Transmitter will provide predictable and consistent results with fewer calibrations. Plunger-less diaphragm valves not only provide repeatable samples but very long life as well. Inside, the Transmitter uses an electronic pressure regulator to monitor and correct carrier flow conditions. With a three minute analysis, natural gas quality variances are quickly detected.
The Btu Transmitter provides +/- 1 Btu results on 800 Btu to 1,500 Btu natural gas streams, Totalflow has a solution for most natural gas applications at a lower cost.
Remote - No Shelter Required...?
The Btu Transmitter has been designed to weather the elements. Frequently, users are forced to exhaust large chunks of budgets to accommodate a critical operating environment for power hungry gas chromatographs. The Btu Transmitter reduces or eliminates the need for this sizable expense. Extreme hot or cold climates will require additional - already engineered - solutions.
Meeting Higher Pressure Demands For Hot Taps And Line Stops
Industries continued development of high pressure pipelines has intensified the requirements to perform hot taps for new line tie-ins without reducing line pressure. The trend for land based and offshore pipelines is to increase line pressures up to the 2200 psi (150 bar) range. The pipe, fittings and valves have been available for these pressures for some time. Now the capability to perform hot taps without reducing line pressure is also available.
IPSCO has designed, built and tested equipment for use up to 2200 psi. This was done in conjunction with a project requirement for Stolt Comex Seaway / Total Oil Marine in the North Sea. The initial project called for a 12[inches] nominal hot tap on a 32[inches] line operating at 2200 psi (150 bar) in 300 feet of seawater. The equipment necessary for this application required the capability of withstanding full line pressure, although the line pressure was 1500 psi (100 bar) at the time of the tap.
To meet this challenge and keep the contract schedule, IPSCO reviewed the capabilities of the IP-914XL tapping machine. We believed the standard rating for this machine was understated, but the industry standard of 1480 psi was all that was required at the time of its development. IPSCO's engineering, manufacturing and field service division teamed up to meet the challenge.
Virtually no changes were required to the machine except for installing an ANSI class 1500 flange on the machine. A test stand was designed, built and live taps were completed. Initially the machine was tested and certified at 3200 psi. Then test taps were performed and certified at 2200 psi (150 bar). To verify the capability of the equipment another test tap was performed at the diving contractor's location utilizing a test stand that they prepared. Again the tap was completed as designed. The actual tap was completed in May of 1998 according to the schedule that was set forth. A second tap at 2200 psi is under contract for this fall.
IPSCO has also completed what is believed to be the highest pressure underwater tap in the Gulf of Mexico on a pipeline operating in excess of 1300 psi. We have also completed numerous subsea line stops.
IPSCO has been providing hot tapping and line stopping equipment, fittings and field services worldwide for over 40 years. Our knowledge, engineering and manufacturing capabilities allow us to meet the challenges in a changing industry. IPSCO also provides a complete line of split sleeve mechanical repair clamps, pin-hole leak clamps, flanged end connectors and pipe end connectors. Standard designs are rated up to 1500 psi with diameters up to 48[inches]. Special requirements are met upon request.
IPSCO was acquired by Innovative Valve Technologies (Invatec) in March 1998. Invatec companies provide on-line and off-line services. The on-line group which includes IPSCO, provides hot tapping, line stopping, repair clamps and leak repair services.
The off-line group provides, but is not limited to, safe seal technology for valve packing repairs, valve reconditioning, new and reconditioned valve sales, safety valve repairs, on site machining and turn around maintenance crews. Invatec can provide turn key services for many of your plant maintenance needs.

Becker's Below Grade Ball Valve Regulator Breaks New Ground
Over the course of recent years, there has been growing concern within the natural gas industry regarding the effects regulating stations often have on the surrounding environment. In an effort to reduce excessive noise and pollution, many gas distribution and transmission companies have begun utilizing equipment which helps to decrease the impact on the environment. Becker Precision Equipment has pioneered the development of several environment-friendly products designed to address these concerns, including the revolutionary Below Grade Ball Valve Regulator.
Noise and Vibration Attenuation
As residential areas find their way closer to regulating sites, there is an increasing need for the attenuation of noise created by gas flow regulation. This noise proves to be not only an intolerable irritant, but also the cause of vibration and subsequent equipment wear. The Below Grade Ball Valve Regulator significantly reduces regulating station noise by over 25 dBA, without any need for additional noise control devices. With the Below Grade Ball Valve Regulator, the earth itself is used to absorb both the noise and vibration caused by regulation.
Now Dig This
Keeping the regulating site below grade reduces station size, creating a clutter-free, aesthetically pleasing workspace. The earth surrounding the pipe also minimizes the ambient heat loss often found in Above Grade Regulator models.
Save Money
While remaining in the same price range as the Above Grade models, significant financial savings can be found through use of the Below Grade Ball Valve Regulator. Smaller adjacent piping and block valves can be used and fewer pipe fittings are necessary for operation. With the earth used for attenuation, there is no need for the addition of expensive silencers, diffusers, or alternate noise attenuating control valves.
Other Becker Products
In addition to the Below Grade Ball Valve Regulator, Becker manufactures Above Grade Valve Regulators, Valve Actuators, Control Instrumentation, and various supplemental accessories. The use of Becker's VRP Pilot or HPP Positioner control instrumentation can completely eliminate atmospheric bleed. With the instrumentation's capability to bleed to a downstream or alternate pressure system, gas is kept in the pipeline, saving money for the operating company. All Becker products are designed specifically to meet the needs of the natural gas industry, keeping with Becker's mission to develop the highest quality, environment-friendly control devices currently available.
"A High Capacity, Noise Attenuating, Self Cleaning, Anti-Cavitating Control Valve With Excellent Flow Control And Up To 300:1 Turn Down Ratio."
The T-Ball[R] rotary control valve is proudly introduced by Final Control Elements Incorporated. This new valve features numerous advantages that are very critical for today's demanding gas industry.
Photo shows a frontal view of an 8[inches] ANSI 600 model T2-G quiet trim, extended range rotary control valve.
This non-clogging, anti-cavitating control valve is the result of combining both the large capacity benefits of a standard ball control valve and the diffusing benefits of a noise trim globe valve.
The T-Ball[R] control valve's versatility lies in the fact that thanks to its patented partial diffusers, it is able to handle fluctuating volumes and pressure levels with smooth and quiet operation. When high flow rates with small pressure drops are needed, the partial diffusers open fully to allow almost unrestricted flow. When high pressure drops and / or low flow rates are needed, the partial diffusers come closer together or intermesh, breaking the flow into multiple streams, decreasing the velocity and dramatically reducing noise levels.
Final Control Elements, Inc. manufactures a wide variety of T-Ball[R] sizes, ranging from 4[inches] up to 16[inches] ANSI 150 through 1500 that can be used for both gas and liquid applications. The T-Ball[R] is commonly utilized in measurement and regulating stations. Other applications include compressor surge control and compressor suction pressure control.
Thanks to the outstanding performance of our valves, they are already being utilized by, a substantial number of prestigious companies, such as Columbia Gas, Conoco, East Tennessee Natural Gas, Exxon, Fluor Daniel, Inc., PEMEX (Petroleos Mexicanos), Stone & Webster, Tennessee Gas Pipeline (El Paso Energy), Texaco, Union Carbide, among others.

Automation: Past, Present and Your Future
Automation is the driving force of efficiency for the next century in the gas pipeline industry. Today's advanced automation systems boost the flexibility, reliability, and competitiveness of pipeline operations. And for automation control services of natural gas-fired reciprocating engines and compressors, Advanced Control Engineering Services (ACES) is the leading, turn-key provider of engineering, consulting, design, software development, custom-panel manufacturing and system installation services. ACES is dedicated exclusively to the natural gas industry, including gas gathering, plant processing and mainline transmission.
ACES is turning heads in the industry by reducing operating costs while significantly improving pipeline efficiency with;
New Processors
Within the last decade, the industry has seen approval of the Class I, Division II High-Speed Processor. Smaller, more powerful, and more functional, these hazardous-area rated processors have significantly enhanced programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The features of the new processors allow ACES to implement advanced control algorithms and calculations that can be communicated in real time to one or more locations for analysis and decision making.
Distributed Input/Output (I/O)
Advances in hazardous-area rated industrial I/O systems include increased selection, improved response time as well as the ability to distribute the I/O modules throughout the compressor station. This distribution of I/O modules greatly reduces construction and installation costs. Instead of a myriad of conduits and wires going to a central location, a single communication cable is pulled back to the main processor.
Graphical User Interface (GUI) Control
Flat LCD screens with Graphical User Interfaces on the unit control panel eliminate the numerous buttons, knobs, switches, lights, meters and gauges. Utilizing either a touch-screen or a membrane keypad system, these advanced color screens can control the entire operation process with the touch of a finger.
Ethernet Communications
The same technology that makes client/server network computing and the Internet possible, can be transferred to compressor station operations. Multiple compressor stations can be linked to a main control center and monitored remotely. The result is continuous, real-time data gathering across the entire pipeline system that is accurate and reliable. ACES's automation means more flexibility, greater reliability and increased competitiveness in the marketplace.
Steel Forgings - Industry's First Choice For Fast Response
SHREVEPORT, LA - The pipeline on Texas' Gulf Coast blew out on New Year's Day. The pipeline company was a major supplier of natural gas to the Northeastern U.S., so the outage would shortly subject most of the East Coast to January's cold, and darkness.
Steel Forgings, Inc., a company known throughout the gas transmission industry for its fast response to immediate-need situations, got the call. Custom forging and fabrication were required for the special welding fittings to repair the pipeline. Calls went out and the company's entire workforce came in on New Year's Day. While the fittings were being built, two Texas Rangers and a flatbed stood by to rush them to the repair site.
"The Rangers hit their flashing lights and they never stopped till they got south of Houston," said Dr. Joe Sedberry, chairman and president of Steel Forgings. "The line was repaired in time, thanks to a lot of skilled people giving up their holiday."
The story is dramatic, but not uncommon.
Steel Forgings, Inc. has been uniquely structured - top to bottom - for quick turnaround and fast response to customer needs throughout its 50 years. Steel Forgings remains a product of co-founders Dick Sedberry and Fleet Davis' guiding principles - distinctive, quality products and manufacturing flexibility.
Beginning with pipeline saddles, Steel Forgings expanded both capacity and capability to include tees, reducers, caps, elbows, and conicals in its Fleet-Linea products. The company began with four employees in a small building in downtown Shreveport, but added forging hammers, forming presses and heat treat furnaces, until it was forced to move to its 15-acre site in North Shreveport, that currently has over 140,000-sq. ft. under roof.
Fleetline products are formed, machined, heat treated, cleaned and inspected to meet all applicable ASME, ANSI, ASTM, API and MSS standards. Specifications for raw materials can include schedules 10 to 160, XH and XX heavy carbon steel, high yield, low alloy, chrome-moly, stainless and other more exotic grades.
But it is Steel Forgings' customer service record that has earned the company high marks throughout the pipeline and gas industry. In a 1966 interview, SFI founder Fleet Davis observed "the manufacturing facilities have been kept so flexible a customer who asks for made-to-order fittings one day is likely to have the shipping papers by air mail the next morning."
This "can-do" track record has provided Steel Forgings a unique niche to serve the industry, a niche that is now expanding as the industry expands, into international markets.
"Quick turnaround of high quality fittings has sustained us through our first 50 years," says SFI General Manager Jay Willhoite. "And we've never strayed from that concept. Every plant expansion or process improvement is keyed toward upgrading our serviceability to our customer. For instance, we've improved our processes for faster delivery to international locations.
"Steel Forgings is an exciting, dynamic place right now," Willhoite continues. "We're a cutting-edge company technologically, driven by a 1940's work ethic. Our customers get the benefit." The customers already know that.
Alnor Tailors Sensors to the Gas Industry
Alnor temperature sensors are found in numerous industries, from chemicals to food processing. But nowhere is Alnor as well-known as it is in the gas compression marketplace. Due to long relationships with engine manufacturers, Alnor thermocouples and RTD's are ensuring safe engine performance at compressor stations worldwide.
Attaining this position of prominence has not been an easy task. It required creative engineering and countless hours of testing. Some of Alnor's important innovations are chronicled below:
Model 3660 Waterproof Thermocouple
Engine manufacturers know their engines are forced to perform in difficult conditions. As a key supplier, these constraints are placed on Alnor's thermocouples as well. For example, in the Middle East, the harsh conditions require frequent engine cleanings. Continued exposure to water often harms the sensor, causing thermocouple failures. Alnor's Model 3660 removed this dilemma. A high temperature thermoplastic cover protects the assembly, permitting normal, stable operation.
Model 1118 Heavy-Duty Thermocouple
The unwritten rule of thermocouple manufacturing is that "MgO" assemblies provide the best vibration protection. While this is true, their popularity also makes them expensive. Alnor developed a sensor that retained all the important qualities of an MgO assembly, but lowered the total cost. This occurs through a proprietary manufacturing process. Ceramic insulators are used to completely encapsulate the sensor, providing excellent stability and shock resistance. The process is also less expensive, allowing Alnor to provide a quality product at a more competitive price. The result is that Alnor 1118 thermocouples protect numerous engine models from overheating.
Alnor is continually exploring ways to build upon its proud tradition of providing temperature measurement solutions to the gas compression industry. Please circle the card number below, we'd like to hear from you.
CP Grounded Out? For Best Results: Electrically Isolate
Cathodically protected structures often have seemingly incompatible requirements. Ideally, a cathodically protected system should be isolated, yet if the system contains electrical equipment, it must also be grounded. At points along pipelines, there may be various types of electrical equipment, such as motor-operated valves, metering facilities, compressor stations, and monitoring equipment, which require grounding.
In the U.S., the grounding criteria is given in Section 250-51 of ANSI/NFPA-70, more commonly known as the National Electric Code (NEC). This grounding requirement can make it difficult to achieve the required levels of cathodic protection (CP). Not only is the cathodically protected equipment then tied to the customer's grounding in the facility, it is also connected to the power utility grounding system. Therefore, it would be highly desirable if cathodically protected structures that contain electrical equipment could be DC isolated from these grounding systems, while still meeting code.
In 1989, Dairyland introduced solid-state products that provided DC isolation while simultaneously providing AC coupling and grounding. One such product is the Polarization Cell Replacement (PCR). An advantage of the solid-state PCR over a polarization cell is that it does not contain hazardous electrolytes, nor does it require routine maintenance.
There are two installation options available to obtain DC isolation using the PCR. The PCR can be installed in the grounding conductor between the electrical equipment and the service panel. In this location, a product would need to be listed by a third party, such as UL, which tests the product to meet the NEC requirements. The PCR is UL and CSA listed for this purpose. The second option locates a PCR between the power utility and customer grounding systems, which can effectively isolate the entire facility from the power utility.
The benefits of DC isolation and AC grounding are many: reductions in CP current required, improvement in CP voltage, compliance to electrical codes, and an increase in safety. Other PCR applications include: DC blocking, induced AC voltage mitigation, protection of insulated joints, and AC fault and lightning current handling, on systems such as pipelines, tanks, power cables and casings, and in grounding circuits. Liquid Epoxy Coatings for Pipeline Applications
The majority of pipelines being constructed and rehabilitated today are in need of liquid epoxy coatings. Many pipeline companies and engineers are specifying Protal 7000 liquid epoxies for the many applications on new and existing pipelines. In new construction Protal 7000 epoxies compliment fusion bond epoxy (FBE) as the main line coating. In addition, many existing pipelines are in need of coating rehabilitation. This creates many opportunities and applications for Denso's Protal 7000 epoxies.
The applications include girth welds, tie-ins, repairs to FBE, fittings, fabrication, directional drills and rehabilitation of existing coatings. Denso manufactures a variety of Protal 7000 grades depending on the application and operating temperatures (up to 250 [degrees] F).
Protal 7000 epoxies are 100% solids and solvent free rendering them VOC free and environmentally responsible. They are easy to apply in the field or shop by brush, roller or spray. The coatings offer excellent cathodic disbondment results, high abrasion resistance, high adhesion and do not shield cathodic protection. Pipeline contractors prefer Protal 7000 epoxies over other coatings for several reasons: high build characteristics up to 40 mils in one coat, fast cure and safe application for its coating crews.
Denso's Protal 7000 epoxy coatings have been specified and used over seven years with major companies such as Arco, Enron, Exxon, El Paso Natural Gas, Duke Energy Shell, Pacific Gas Transmission, Chevron, TransCanada, Nova and many other pipeline companies.
Engineers, contractors, and oil & gas companies consider Denso's line of pipeline liquid epoxies as the number one choice for coatings. Denso continues to research and develop the latest and most advanced products to meet the demands of the pipeline industry.
EEI Introduces Sonic Nozzle Prover for Windows NT[TM]
Sonic nozzle technology made a dramatic impact on the gas industry in 1993. Although it had been in development for many years, the speed and cost of micro-computers was a major limiting factor in the development of a cost effective sonic nozzle prover. EEI's Sonic Nozzle Prover[R] is installed in utilities all over the United States. Now customers are demanding more than just fast meter tests. "EEI had the experience, knowledge and understanding to provide a cost-effective answer to our meter management needs."
- Earl Lewis, Baltimore Gas & Electric.
Ergonomic Design
The EEl Sonic Nozzle Prover is unique in its ergonomic design. The monitor is placed on the side of the stand, instead of above it. This minimizes neck and back stresses on the users because they are not required to look up unnaturally or reach up to touch screens that are at or above eye level. Since the monitor can be located on either side, it is ideal for left or right-handed operators.
Index Checking
The speed of sonic nozzle proving comes from using the EEl AIMS[TM] unit to sense the movement of the flag rod inside the meter. A complete and accurate test can be performed with only a few revolutions of the tangent. In addition, EEI's Sonic Nozzle Prover can also automatically check the index at the same time to make sure that it is working and is the correct index.
Why Windows NT[TM]?
The industry standard PC operating system in the client/server environment for the foreseeable future is Windows NT[TM]. It provides all the flexibility needed to connect to relational databases, new object relational databases, legacy mainframe systems, a corporate intranet, and even the world wide web. Object oriented programming tools designed to run on Windows NT[TM] make development and maintenance of EEI's Sonic Nozzle Prover[R] software easier, quicker and cheaper. "EEI is a pleasure to work with. They provide excellent service."
- Bob Locke, Baltimore Gas & Electric
Graphic Interface
EEI has designed a Sonic Nozzle Prover[R] screen that is both easy to use and flexible at the same time. All the information that a technician needs is always at his fingertips. With a simple point and click you can see meter information, ERT information, extended proof results and environment data. And the important information like test results are highlighted so you can see them from across a room.
Not only is this prover easy operate, it has on-line help available as well. The entire user manual is only a click away, ready to answer any question that might come up.
True 32-bit Multi-tasking
Windows NT[TM] takes advantage of all of the computing power available in today's pentium class processors. This prover can do more than just test meters. While the operator is testing a meter he can receive e-mail, access the corporate intranet, print a report, or write a document. He can save time too because while the meter is testing, the operator can enter additional meter information or access a database to update the meter information. The point is, with this kind of flexibility, the options are limited only by imagination.
Communications
"EEI connected to our mainframe through third-party software. They were very flexible." - Frank Neibauer, Northern States Power. The open architecture of the prover system provides many options for connecting to other computers. TCP/IP makes the most sense in most utilities. It is standard and cost-effective. It also provides several options for remote dial-up maintenance and access through the internet. The EEI Sonic Nozzle Prover can connect to ethernet or Token Ring LANs.
Data Management
Since the prover is on a local area network, it can connect to any type of relational database: Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Ingres, DB/2 to name just a few. Database updates are now easier and more straightforward. Plus, if there happens to be a network interruption for some reason, it doesn't matter, because EEI's Sonic Nozzle Prover[R] will save the information and pass it on automatically when the network comes up again.

ROC and FloBoss[TM] Product Lines to be OPC Compliant
Fisher Controls is leading the way in developing OPC (OLE for Process Control) compliant software for supervisory control and data acquisition applications that employ the company's Remote Operations Controller (ROC) and FloBoss[TM] product lines.
OLE for Process Control (OPC) is a standard that provides benefits to both vendors and end users by defining a common interface to access data. OPC is based on the OLE/COM standard from Microsoft which is currently available in Microsoft's NT and Windows 95 operating systems. OPC provides for a high degree of interoperability between client and applications supplied by different vendors.
OPC compliments Fieldbus standardization efforts. Fieldbus efforts today focus on providing secure communications among field devices, whereas OPC focuses on providing communications between applications, and between field devices and applications. OLE/COM technology will fill this gap by allowing integration of applications to one another, and between applications and field devices.
The OPC standard has the potential to make "plug and play" software a reality. Users will be able to choose best-in-class products for a given application and easily integrate information from these devices with software applications across the network.
Increased I/O Capability Gives FloBoss 503[TM] Greater Applications Flexibility
Fisher Controls has just increased the I/O capability of its highly-successful FloBoss 503[TM] Flow Manager, one of the oil and gas industries' premier single-run natural gas flow computers. The new I/O capability not only lets FloBoss 503 interface to more process devices, but adds PID loop control as well through the use of analog outputs.
This enhanced I/O is made possible through a new plug-in board that uses a microprocessor for monitoring, control, and acquisition of data from external devices connected to the I/O channels. By employing its own microprocessor, loading of the main microprocessor is reduced thus enabling the unit to maintain high levels of operating performance.
The I/O complement includes four contact-sense discrete inputs, two of which can be configured by software as pulse inputs; two dry-contact solid-state relay outputs; three single-ended voltage-sense analog inputs; and one current-loop analog output. Each I/O point uses a removable plug-in terminal for field wiring connections.
Power for I/O devices is provided through the board, eliminating the need for separate power sources. The power can be switched off under processor control to reduce the load on the battery if required.
New Parametric Maintenance Extends Integrity Services to Entire Pipeline
A whole new approach to inspection and maintenance recently launched by Pipetronix Expert Services under the banner of "Parametric Maintenance" takes the entire transport system as its subject of study. By measuring all the influences which affect the efficiency of the operation, and analyzing the interactions between them, a systemwide Risk Assessment can be made. From that an integrity program can be developed for the entire system, rather than for individual components.
Parametric methods are not new, but until now they have not been applied systematically in pipeline maintenance. For example NASA in the USA has for some years used Parametric Cost Analysis as a basis for optimizing the costs of space vehicle designs, an area where NASA firmly acknowledges "cost is the key design parameter." For pipelines the Parametric approach uses a great diversity of parameters (data sets) for decision making - a proven route to optimizing maintenance efficiency.
Two areas are considered - maintenance efficiency and pipeline integrity. Parametric Maintenance views the pipeline as a business system as well as an engineering asset. It treats the pipeline as an integrated structure rather than a simple tube. Maintenance efficiency is measured with reference to the pipeline's core business and numerical methods are used that facilitate the analysis and control of maintenance performance.
Parametric Maintenance efficiently rehabilitates not only the pipe steel but, as required, the pipeline's auxiliary systems such as CP, coatings, valves and SCADA.
It can be applied at every stage of a pipeline's life, from the concept design stage to the end-of-life. It can be used with equal effectiveness on liquid or gas pipelines, onshore or offshore:
Parametric Maintenance is applied to:
PIPE STEEL
* Corrosion
* Cracks
* Dents
* Free Spans (offshore)
CORROSION CONTROL SYSTEMS
* Cathodic Protection
* Cathode Film Enhancement
* External & Internal Coatings
* Inhibitor Programs
AUXILIARY SYSTEMS
* Pumps, Compressors, Pressure Reducers
* Valves, Flow Meters, Pig Traps
* SCADA
* Right of Way
Parametric Maintenance uses a diversity of parameters (data sets), in combination, to make the most accurate calculation of a pipeline's integrity. Hence decisions about repairs, and actions to improve defect prevention systems, are made on the basis of a combined analysis of data.
Input data for onshore pipelines comes from many different sources, including in-line inspections for metal loss and stress cracking, CP and coating surveys, construction and repair records, operational data and soil property data, geometry inspections and GIS/GPS position references. For submarine pipelines input data is relevant to the situation. For example sidescan sonar results, diver inspection data etc. replace onshore data sets as appropriate.
Multivariate Analysis
Pipeline integrity assessments use a statistical method (Multivariate Analysis) so that defect control and repair decisions are made on the basis of a wide range of pipeline data rather than using restricted data sets. To obtain the best advantages of this type of relational analysis it is necessary to work on all available information about the pipeline. As much information as possible is derived from the diversity of the data, i.e. its collective quantities, rather than restricting attention to subsets of it.
Through its Expert Services Pipetronix provides all of the resources for Parametric Maintenance, including services for the measurement and analysis of pipeline integrity. Inspections and assessments can be applied to the full range of operating systems, from the pipeline's tubular construction to the auxiliary components. Analysis procedures range from elementary rule-based systems to the most sophisticated Fitness For Purpose Assessments and Risk Assessments. The Expert Services also provide all of the resources for small scale repairs or large scale rehabilitation for any part of the pipeline, followed by final certification.
Parametric Maintenance is a unique process, employing new methods and technologies, which provides "best of the best" solutions for pipeline maintenance.

TS-1000: New Smart Switch for Chemical Injection Pumps Now Available
A variety of industries use pneumatic metering pumps for accurate injection of chemicals. While these pumps are very effective in metering fluids, issues such as over-injection, labor requirements, and maintenance are often overlooked. PGI International's TS-1000 Injection Pump Smart Switch reduces chemical, manpower and maintenance costs. The TS-1000 is a smart switch valve that automatically stops chemical injection pumps at predetermined input parameters of temperature and/or flow.
Product Overview
The TS-1000 unit consists of a 3-way valve, controller, battery pack, programmable temperature probe and external input, all tightly packaged in a NEMA 3R enclosure. The TS-1000 operates by routing instrument supply air/gas through its valve. To disable the injection pump, the TS-1000 closes the valve, blocking instrument supply gas to the pump. The valve position is determined by input parameters, such as flow and/or temperature. Temperature is monitored via a programmable probe that requires no calibration and can quickly be pre-set to operate at user-defined upper and lower switch points. An external input also allows the TS-1000 to be controlled by a device such as a flow meter, flow computer or flow switch. The TS-1000 is FM approved for service in hazardous locations.
Programmable Temperature Probe
The TS-1000 utilizes a programmable digital probe to monitor ambient or pipeline temperature. Open and Close temperature set points are stored in the probe's non-volatile memory, creating an adjustable dead-band between these points. The Open set point opens the valve when the temperature is colder than the designated temperature. When the temperature rises to a point warmer than the Close set point, the valve closes.
The temperature set points are preset at the factory, but are easily field adjusted by using T-Config[TM] configuration software that requires only a personal computer running Microsoft Windows 95 and a RS232 serial port. The probe is unplugged from the TS-1000 controller board and connected to the interface cable. When T-Config[TM] is running, the probe registers itself and downloads its temperatures for display. A single click transfers the new set points over to the probe's memory registers, and programming is complete.
External Input
In addition to disabling the injection pump based on temperature, the TS-1000 can also automatically stop the pump when pipeline flow stops. The TS-1000's external input allows the controller to disable the injection pump based on an external signal. This external input can be connected to most flow meters, flow computers and differential pressure switches. Other remote devices that provide either voltage pulses, contact closure or an open collector can also be utilized.
Diagnostics
The TS-1000 controller continuously performs tests to locate possible system failures. If a problem such as a low battery or an unplugged temperature sensor is detected, the valve is automatically switched to the open position to enable chemical injection. The user can also perform three independent diagnostic tests to check the battery voltage, valve and actuator, and state of the external input. Running diagnostics allows the pump to be temporarily enabled or disabled to perform injection system testing.
Efficient Operation
The patent pending valve actuation method of the TS-1000 is designed for extremely low power consumption. When the valve requires switching, a low power gear motor rotates a cam to switch the valve. The micro-power controller, which monitors the temperature probe and external input, tracks the cam position and stops the motor when the valve has switched. The valve can be held in the open or closed position without additional power drain since the cam motor runs only when the valve is changing positions. A small FM approved alkaline battery provides years of maintenance-free service.
Save Chemical, Manpower, and Maintenance Costs
The TS-1000 offers significant savings in chemical injection operations. Since the TS-1000 automatically disables the injection pump when it is not needed, chemical costs are greatly reduced. In fact, savings in chemicals alone can justify the cost of the TS-1000. Field testing of the TS-1000 in an Anadarko Basin methanol injection application confirmed a significant reduction in methanol usage, from an average 44% decrease to a high of 63%. These reductions in chemical costs alone provided a total payback period of only 60 days. The TS-1000 also saves labor costs. With a TS-1000 unit installed, personnel do not have to be sent to remote locations, especially during cold periods or dangerous weather conditions. Finally, the TS-1000 reduces maintenance cost by saving wear and tear on pneumatic timers and pumps in the field. All of these savings easily cost-justify the purchase of a TS-1000.

More gas is measured every day by orifice meters than by all other meter types combined. And during the past seven decades, Daniel has provided hundreds of thousands of orifice fittings - more than all other manufacturers combined, according to Jerry Blankenship, Product Manager for Daniel's differential pressure meters. He provides insight into why orifice meters are the preferred method of measuring natural gas and other fluids along with factors critical to a successful meter installation.
Orifice Meter Advantages
Jerry points out, "The design of orifice meters is simple, yet they are accurate and versatile. They can be used to measure most fluids - gas, liquid, steam and even two-phase fluids with a small amount of second phase. Orifice accuracy can be maintained in liquid streams with as much as 5% (by volume) gas bubbles and in gas streams with up to about 2% (by weight) of solids or liquids."
He continues, "Another factor in orifice popularity is the breadth of options available for sizes, pressure ratings, trim, flow rates, and other characteristics. For example, the Daniel Senior[R] Orifice Fitting - the premier dual-chamber fitting with a worldwide reputation for high accuracy, reliability, ease of use, maintainability and safety - is available in 2[inches] through 48[inches] sizes. Pressure ratings go to 2500# ANSI and 10.000# WOG, the highest in the industry.
Field repairable, the meter meets API "14.3" and ISO 5167 without exceptions or penalties. Its time-proven, lubricated slide valve to isolate upper and lower chambers is available in a "soft- seat" version for bubble-tight sealing."
Three trims are available, and Jerry suggests that if there is any doubt about which trim to specify or if special materials are needed, it is always safer to contract a Daniel specialist for advice. Seals are available made from nitrile, Teflon, and metal-to-metal. "DVS" seals are vulcanized to the orifice plate for best operation in larger sizes. Hydrostatic test to 1.5 times the rated pressure and both high- and low-pressure plate seal test are standard.
Success factors
"Three important success factors for any orifice meter installation," says Jerry, "are complete specifications and/or application details, correct field installation, and proper maintenance.
Specifications should include nominal bore diameter based on maximum and minimum gas volume to be measured for the immediate future along with the third and tenth year of use. If gas quality is other than "normal pipe line quality," it should be noted when ordering. An order should also include notation about any standards or codes involved, according to Jerry.
Daniel Orifice plates are inspected with a Coordinate Measuring Machine to insure compliance with customer, Daniel, and standards' requirements. Unless otherwise specified, plates will be beveled to the smaller of 1/50 of the line ID or 1/8 of the orifice bore. Special designs include: counterbores to limit plate-edge thickness (no bevel), segmental for use where solids are entrained in gas or liquid flow, eccentric bore to help pass solids or slurries, and quarter round for viscous media with Reynolds Numbers below 100,000.
Field Installation and station design directly impact meter performance. How many meter runs will be required? What valving, if any, will be needed? What noise and vibration problems need to be anticipated?
Jerry suggests, "A useful rule-of-thumb for proper multiple meter runs is to minimize velocities in the header by making its area 1-1/2 to 2 times the combined areas of all meter tubes connected to it. If proper distribution is not achieved, it is possible that with high flow rates one tube will take excessive flow - with resulting high differential - before the other tubes reach their maximum flow capacity. Station throughput will be unnecessarily limited."
A major reason why Senior fittings are so popular is that no extra valving or piping is needed to inspect or change a plate without interrupting line flow. For single-chamber fittings, one of three control valve systems is commonly used: direct-acting or self-actuated regulators, pilot-operated regulators or control valves, controller-operated control valves. Most operators choose the simplest configuration that will meet station needs.
The importance of how much noise will be caused by high flow velocities varies with station location while vibration will be a problem anywhere. Dynamic fluid noise and vibration will generally be acceptable when flow velocity underground is limited to 200 fps and in above-ground piping to 100 fps. More sophisticated analysis of noise and vibration can be achieved considering mass-velocity values instead of simply velocity alone.
Proper maintenance is essential to insure accurate readings and long service life. Explains Jerry, "one of the best ways to reduce 'lost and unaccounted for' gas (or corresponding liquid losses) is to maintain orifice fittings and plates properly. The periodicity of plate inspections is best determined by frequent inspection until enough information is obtained to determine the optimum timing of routine inspections. Should flowing media, temperatures or pressures change significantly, inspect more frequently until a new routine can be defined.
Daniel provides suggested routine steps to help keep Senior fittings operating properly, including fitting operation at least monthly and checking drain-plug holes to prevent accuracy- destroying debris buildup."
Jerry cautions, "If sediment is likely to accumulate in the fitting, install a blowdown valve in place of the pipe fitting. Make sure the plate carrier is raised before blowdown or cleaning through blowdown valves. A pigging ring is available to help prevent dirt from being forced into the plate carrier cavity in the fitting during pigging operations."
And some additional cautions. Don't install a blank orifice plate to block off the line; it can't hold high pressures and may be blown down the line or "dished" so badly that it won't crank out. Use only factory certified Daniel parts; you cannot see metallurgical quality, stress concentrations or dimension details. What looks alike may actually be importantly different.
Conclusion
By following the simple steps outlined, you can greatly increase your chances for a successful installation.

Technology and Listening to Customers Yields New Products at Perfection
In recent years, Perfection Corporation has invested significant resources and energy into the development and introduction of new products. Most of these new product innovations are the result of joint development efforts with their customers. It is through these close relationships that Perfection is truly able to understand the needs and requirements of the market. The company's new R & D laboratory is home to both new development projects and routine performance testing of existing products, as well as customer product evaluations. Perfection's ability to simulate real world operating conditions is key to their track record of providing safe, quality products and value to the customer.
Several of the most recent and exciting innovations from Perfection include the 2[inches] polyethylene shut-off valve, the 4[inches] mechanical coupling and the PELT[TM] riser. All three products have been designed and introduced by Perfection Corporation during the last year, clearly stating their promise of innovation through understanding.
New 2[inches] Polyethylene Shut-Off Valve
Perfection has introduced a new, low-profile 2[inches] PSV[TM] polyethylene gas shut-off vane. This new modified ball vane (MBV) features a body height of only 6.75[inches], approximately half the height of Perfection's current 2[inches] valve, and weighs only 8.25 lbs., more than 20% lighter than the other valve.
This more compact MBV valve is maintenance free and requires no cathodic protection or corrosion inhibiting coatings. Also, it incorporates a large port design that permits maximum flow characteristics in both main line and branch saddle applications.
This new valve will operate at temperatures from -20 [degrees] F to 100 [degrees] F and meets or exceeds the requirements of ANSI B 16.40, ASTM D-2513 and US DOT Part 192. The valve is available in both medium and high density polyethylene with Permasert[R] coupling or fusion outlets.
4[inches] Mechanical Coupling Introduced
New 4[inches] polyethylene mechanical couplings for joining PE to PE piping or steel to PE piping, have been introduced by Perfection. The recently developed steel to PE coupling addresses an industry need in the joining of steel to polyethylene gas piping. These couplings provide the same noncorrosive benefits as Perfection's smaller couplings (1/2[inch] CTS through 2[inches] IPS), only for larger 4[inches] gas mains.
These new couplings feature a center body section constructed of ASTM D-2513/ISO 4437 gas grade polyethylene (PE 3408). As is the case with all Perfection couplings, 4[inches] mechanical couplings are designed to withstand the pressure of the PE piping or tubing installed. Perfection developed this new product as a cooperative project with Public Service Electric and Gas Company of New Jersey.
Non-corrosive Gas Riser Developed

Booster Club Announces New Air Powered Pumps For Dewatering
The Booster Club pressure boosters have been on the market less than a year, but what a response! Whether you prefer to purchase, lease, or rent, we have a viable solution to an ever growing problem. Our newest product is in response to another problem that customers have asked us to address. No one looks forward to pumping water out of trenches after a rain or just from groundwater seepage. The usual battle with getting the small gas engine started, getting the pump primed, and then keeping it from self destructing when it pumps dry has frustrated every crew at some point.
Our new air powered pumps solve all of these problems and more! The pumps are self priming from as far down as 18 feet, no engine to start- just connect to air, and are not damaged when they pump dry. The pump will flow 150 gallons per minute, or less if you control the air flow powering the pump, very handy when you need to continuously remove groundwater seepage to keep your crews working. Our unit comes to you ready for the field- protected by a steel framework and includes suction and discharge hoses with cam-lock couplers.
Call Kris Coleman at DTI for air powered pumping, metering, and dispensing solutions.

RADR - The "Stable" Solution to Riser Alignment Problems
The RAD[R] Riser Alignment Device was an innovative idea originally designed for one of the nation's leading gas companies looking for an inexpensive method of reducing service costs and saving the company's time and money. Instead of extra time being spent on setting new meters that plumbers or installers may have set the piping too far apart or too close together or risers simply being out of alignment, the RAD[R] Device can assist in the prevention of these mishaps and keep the risers the correct distance apart and the proper height. The RAD[R] also allows for the swivels to be left in place in the field and upon meter removal. By utilizing the RAD[R] it is possible to spare the company additional costs of new swivels.
The RAD[R] Riser Alignment Device is constructed of an extremely durable fiberglass nylon reinforced material which is highly resistant to heat and cold. The noncorrosive, reusable tool provides a lightweight, effective device for field crews and inspectors to readily evaluate abandoned or new meter settings for proper plugging and riser alignment. The RAD[R] Device has also become extremely popular in pre-fabricated meter settings. Simple and quick with little field adjustment, the RAD[R] saves many companies both time and money. The extended thread height of the RAD[R] provides a positive sealing surface to meter nut swivels. In addition, the I-Beam construction for strength and the standard 6[inches] centers insure precise riser settings time and time again.
The RAD[R] Riser Alignment Device is available in four different sizes: 10 LT., 1A Sprague, 20 LT. and 30 LT. Each device is manufactured and patented by Gas Products, Inc., out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The current list price of all sizes mentioned is less than $4.00 each.
Over the past few years more and more gas companies throughout the United States have come to rely on the RAD[R] Riser Alignment Device. They have found the non-metallic RAD[R] much easier to handle with less bulk and lighter weight than most other types of alignment devices. Our devices do not require special tools, pipe dope or painting. They are built to last and to be reused again and again for savings today and in the future!

New DSP Data Radios For SCADA And MAS Applications
The MDS 4710 and MDS 9710 are the next generation of transceivers from Microwave Data Systems. Utilizing advanced DSP technology these new radios were designed specifically for high performance telemetry applications (point-multipoint).
MDS protects your communications investment, by making the MDS 4710 and MDS 9710 interoperable with the MDS 4310A and MDS 2310A series of radios respectively.
High reliability, was implemented in part by using a single circuit board DSP design, with no additional option boards required, and exceptional protection is provided for the radios by housing them in a rugged die-cast aluminum case. This unique design allow the units to operate reliably in industrial-grade applications, with a MTBF of [greater than] 100,000 hours.
Use in the oil and gas industry, electric distribution, water/wastewater management, traffic control, and many other applications, requires the radios to be highly flexible. To that end they have dual synthesizers which allow frequency agility, and the radios feature half duplex or simplex within band operation. In addition, each unit may operate as a master or remote radio and they have sleep mode capability for solar power applications. They also offer a separate diagnostic port, that allows performance monitoring without effecting system operation. The radios also feature a digital output available for RTU reset etc.
Performance improvements over existing systems were achieved in nearly every area. As an example, the transceivers provide 3dB improved sensitivity of -114 dBM at 1200 bps, -113 dBM at 4800 bps, and -111 dBM at 9600 bps over previous MDS systems.

GAS MICRO
"THE MOST ECONOMICAL ELECTRONIC VOLUME CORRECTOR AVAILABLE AND WE DID NOT SACRIFICE QUALITY, DURABILITY OR FEATURES. IN FACT, WE ADDED VALUE."
100% FAT FREE?
"100% Fat Free" became the call to action for Sigmacor's marketing and engineering departments when we embarked on the development of the GAS MICRO (the "MICRO") product.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
It means every aspect of the product design is evaluated to identify and eliminate waste. Waste is defined as any feature, function, or component that was NOT needed or any item where the cost outweighed the benefit measured by our customer. Our customers rolled up their sleeves and GOT INVOLVED.
"VALUE" ... A MUCH ABUSED MARKETING BUZZ-WORD?
Sigmacor has negotiated agreements with the largest power supply manufacturers. Our customer purchases the batteries direct, cutting out the middleman...us. We've done the same with the temperature RTD component. These are just two examples of how Sigmacor adds VALUE.
THE MICRO-ECONOMICS
The MICRO's low unit cost justifies application at medium-to-low flow measurement sites, including pressure factor measurement. Now our customers can realize all the benefits of EFM at sites that couldn't justify $1200 (USD) or even more expensive electronic correctors. We call this the MICRO-ECONOMICS. The MICRO is the perfect solution to replace mechanicals and to retrofit those electronics that are not year 2000 compliant.
WHAT ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS?
The most advanced, economical and simple data communications products and services available in this market (landline, cellular, and satellite modem). Our systems should work with any existing data acquisition software. This is the first offering of truly "non-proprietary" systems.
POWER SUPPLY - YOU TOLD US THIS WAS IMPORTANT.
We've developed the most advanced power management system in the business. Depending on the configuration selected, Sigmacor will guarantee up to 10 years operating battery life. Three levels of power supply is available. The MICRO can run lithium, alkaline or in combination.
SO HOW DO YOU GET A MICRO?
Sigmacor would be pleased to meet with you to present the MICRO and listen to your needs. We have representatives across North America and abroad. Call us toll free to schedule a presentation. 1-888-GAS-2005.
