Opinion polls indicate Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Likud Party maintaining a solid lead over its main rival the Labor Party leading up to next week's Israeli general election.
The surveys in leading dailies Ma'ariv and Yedioth Ahronoth show two corruption scandals
The Ma'ariv poll also shows that the Labor party would win more votes if its candidate for prime minister were Shimon Peres, a veteran labor figure, rather than the chosen candidate, Amram Mitzna. The Ma'ariv survey indicates Labor could win as many as 29 seats with Peres as party leader.
Ha'aretz reports aides close to Mitzna have firmly rejected any possibility that he would step down as Labor leader. Instead, the paper says, Labor will launch a new publicity campaign Monday focusing on economic issues. Last week, Mitzna said the Labor party would not join a national unity government led by Likud.
