'Birthright Israel' Contributes Millions to Tourism.

By YnetNews.com

About 13,000 Jewish students from around the world are expected to come to Israel this winter with the "Birthright Israel" project known in Hebrew as "Taglit," an increase of 2,000 students from the previous year. The large number of students will contribute approximately

NIS 100 million ($24 million) to the Israeli tourism industry and the economy in general.

One of the reasons for the increase in the number of students is largely due to the contribution of billionaire Sheldon Adelson. The students are all between the ages of 18 and 26 and are on their first ever visit to Israel.

The Birthright Israel project began six years ago for the purpose of strengthening the bond between Jewish youth around the world and the State of Israel and their Jewish identity. These students arrive in Israel for a stay of 10 days where they tour national heritage sites and meet with Israeli youth, mostly fighters in elite IDF units.

During the six years of operation, more than 110,000 students from 50 countries arrived in Israel with the project and it has generated more than NIS 900 million ($215 million) for the tourism industry and economy in Israel.
