When the gravestones of the pillars of Zionism, Herzl and Ben-Gurion, are desecrated and disgraced by vandals, is Israeli society on the verge of falling into disarray? The gravesites of Zionisms founder and Israels first prime minister were defaced and
In two shocking incidents that may have been unrelated, the tombstones of Binyamin Zeev Herzl and first prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, were smeared with graffiti. Ben-Gurions tombstone in the Negev kibbutz of Sde Boker, where the elderly prime minister spent his final days, was sprayed with the word Hitler spelled out in Hebrew.
Edva Lavid, spokesperson for the Ramat Hanegev municipality said she was shocked by the vandalism. Ive lived in this area for 15 years and I dont remember anything like this, she said.
Herzls tombstone on Mt. Herzl, the Zionist shrine that bears its founders name, was sprayed with the words neo-Nazis and Yossi Beilin in Hebrew scrawl. Yossi Beilin is the head of the left-wing Yahad party. Beilin is also the proponent of the Geneva Initiative a proposal that would relinquish all of Judea and Samaria, as well as the Old City of Jerusalem to Arab control, an initiative that would require the expulsion of more than 250,000 Jews from their homes.
The vandalism on Mt. Herzl comes just as the Zionist Organization that Herzl had founded was preparing to dedicate a new museum devoted to Herzl at the site. Police say the two incidents appear to be part of a wave of politically motivated graffiti that is sweeping the country.
