$2m for research on kidney repair.

Australian researchers will investigate the use of human stem cells in repairing damage to kidneys. The technique calls for the stem cells to be extracted from the patient's own bone marrow, then injected into the kidney, where it is hoped they will develop into healthy kidney cells. A patient at John Hunter Hospital in New South Wales received the treatment in April 2002. Monash University's Sharon Ricardo will receive $A1.6m from the Australian Kidney Foundation and her university to carry out the research. Further work will be
