MAYWOOD, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2004

Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation (NASDAQ:NYMX) Holds U.S. and

Global Patent Rights for the Use of Statins for the Prevention and

Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.

> Lowering cholesterol may reduce the risk of acquiring Alzheimer's disease (AD) according to a recent review of the scientific and clinical studies in this area published in the January 8th issue of Neuron (Neuron 2004; 41:7-10). As the author, Dr. B. Wolozin, notes, statin drugs "are widely used in the population and reduce serum cholesterol very effectively" and offer "a fertile avenue" for potential treatment of AD. The review states that "studies indicate that there is up to a 70% lower prevalence and incidence of AD in subjects taking statins."

More broadly, researchers have been looking at the link between risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol, and AD as highlighted by a recent story in Newsweek magazine (Jan 19, 2004, "Now, Reduce Your Risk of Alzheimer's; Intriguing New Studies Say the Same Measures That Help Your Heart Could Also Help Prevent Dementia"). The Newsweek story refers to the research of Dr. Larry Sparks, a leading researcher into the role of elevated cholesterol in Alzheimer's disease. At the Fourth Manhattan Alzheimer's Disease Conference, sponsored by Nymox, Dr. Sparks reviewed the results of his team's extensive studies supporting the potential value of statins in the treatment of AD.

Dr. Wolozin's paper reviews the many lines of evidence pointing towards a role for cholesterol in AD. The paper also points out that subjects with elevated mid-life cholesterol are at increased risk for AD.

The current global market for statins is estimated at $19 billion per year and to be growing at 15% per year. Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly, afflicting over 4 million people it is estimated in the U.S. alone.

"Effective methods of preventing or delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease are urgently needed as our population ages," said Dr. Michael Munzar, Medical Director of Nymox. "Statins are well-known, widely prescribed medications with an excellent track record of safety and efficacy. They offer real potential for meeting the challenge of Alzheimer's disease."
