Aspect Medical Systems and the Brain Resource Company to Collaborate on Mild Cognitive...

NEWTON, Mass. -- Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASPM) and The Brain Resource Company (BRC) have agreed to collaborate in a multi-year clinical study that will evaluate brain electrical activity in patients identified with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a memory impairment that often precedes

Alzheimer's disease. The study will be conducted with researchers from Brown University's Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island and Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia.

"BRC has relationships with key centers and influential thought leaders who are conducting research related to MCI. We expect that this access will help expedite the process of gaining more complete information about brain activity throughout the range of cognitive ability," said Philip Devlin, general manager of Aspect's Neuroscience division. "We believe that this information will advance our efforts to develop a brain monitoring index to identify patients with MCI or early stage Alzheimer's disease, to track disease progression over time and to monitor the effectiveness of drug therapies."

Studies have shown that six to 25 percent of patients diagnosed with MCI will progress to Alzheimer's disease each year. Further, four million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease and another eight million are estimated to suffer from MCI.
