REPEAT/Netwave Technologies to demonstrate new WLANtechnology utilizing a draft of the IEEE 802.

PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 1997--Netwave Technologies, Inc., today announced that it will demonstrate new wireless LAN (WLAN) technology at Networld + Interop May 6-8, 1997, at booth No. 1235. The platform will incorporate new technology from AMD and Netwave, and will implement

a draft of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN protocol. The demonstration will provide a preview of Netwave's next-generation AirSurfer WLAN products.

The next-generation Netwave AirSurfer products will feature an enhanced frequency hopping radio and antenna technology that will provide significantly improved WLAN system and adapter performance through more even and consistent radio reception. The new radio technology will also provide higher network performance by improving the AirSurfer system's ability to automatically distribute and balance traffic load.

In addition, the next generation of Netwave's wireless LAN products will utilize AMD's PCnet(tm)-Mobile WLAN solution. The PCnet(tm)-Mobile solution delivers a sophisticated media access controller (MAC) device, protocol software and device drivers for various operating systems. The technology demonstration at Networld + Interop will show how AMD's new PCnet-Mobile device enables support for both the proven Netwave WLAN protocol and the soon-to-be-ratified IEEE 802.11 protocol

"When the 802.11 technology is available in future Netwave AirSurfer products, users will be able to deploy a WLAN system based on the proven Netwave protocol and later switch to the IEEE 802.11 industry standard once it is market-ready," said Jerry N. Ulrich, president and chief executive officer of Netwave. "The upgrade path will be an easy and seamless software upgrade, which will double data throughput, relative to previous protocols, since it will be able to take advantage of Netwave's new radio technology."

AMD and Netwave began collaborating in the development of WLAN technology in 1993, when Netwave was part of Xircom, Inc. Together they enhanced core Netwave technology to support the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

"We are pleased to have teamed with one of the leading component providers in the networking industry," added Ulrich. "AMD's PCnet-Mobile solution offers superior integration, flexibility and sophistication."

"The existence of standards-based components will accelerate the mainstream acceptance of WLANs. WLAN system vendors can then focus their resources on adding value for the customer rather than reinventing protocols," said Bob Krueger, vice president and general manager of AMD's Network Products Division. "AMD is pleased to be partnering with Netwave to provide a complete solution for WLANs based on the proposed IEEE 802.11 standards. Our joint efforts are a significant step in bringing this technology to the mass market."
