SAN ANTONIO--(AutomotiveWire)--May 29, 1997--ATX Technologies launched a vehicle tracking industry first with their new product offering that contains an embedded miniaturized cell phone.
The OnGuard LS, the initial offering in a new line of OnGuard products, contains an embedded cell
Advantages of the OnGuard LS include lower monthly monitoring fees and no separate cell phone service fees. "The LS concept was born out of customer demand for a unit that could locate a missing vehicle, yet eliminate the need for a separate cell phone," said Steve Riebel, president and CEO of ATX Technologies Inc.
The embedded miniaturized communications device was jointly developed by ATX Technologies (http://www.track.com) and Standard Communications. Standard Communications is a wireless communications company based in San Jose, Calif.
AT&T Wireless Services has entered into an agreement with ATX Technologies to provide a nationwide cellular network for the new generation of OnGuard products. "The national cellular network agreement with AT&T lets us set flat rates for our basic services, and that will open new markets for our products," said Riebel.
The OnGuard LS uses Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and the embedded cellular technology to help recover the vehicle if it is stolen. Once the vehicle owner contacts the OnGuard Response Center to report the vehicle stolen, the LS unit is activated. The response center then monitors the vehicle's speed, location and direction and provides updates to the police authorities. With proper police authorization, the response center can send a command to the unit to kill the ignition. In addition to tracking a stolen vehicle, customers can also request a remote power door unlock for a nominal fee. And for those customers already carrying a cellular phone, they can call the response center to request roadside or directional assistance.
ATX Technologies Inc., formerly ATX Research Inc., is the leading provider of vehicle tracking, personal security and directional assistance for the aftermarket of personal automobiles. The company has recently started marketing its products to truck fleets and anyone needing to track or locate heavy equipment. ATX Technologies is the only company of its kind in the industry with complete vertical integration from the design, manufacturing, sales and response center. The OnGuard LS, as well as the current product, the OnGuard CP, can be installed in any vehicle to protect owners from theft and other crimes, and provide convenience services. There are 150 OnGuard dealers around the country and information on locations is available by calling 800/466-4827.
